Wearing My Patent Suit

I read an article about Facebook yesterday concerning the newest legal battle facing the fledgling social network:

The lawsuit hinges on U.S. Patent 6,519,629 (”System for creating a community for users with common interests to interact in”), which was issued in 2003 and is now owned by the plaintiffs, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners.

People are all up in arms about this - mad at the plaintiffs for such a ridiculous suit, mad at the patent office for accepting such a ridiculous patent, mad at the people who are mad at the patent office because they don’t understand how it works. But I personally think we should be rejoicing in this development. Lawsuits like this allow us all to make lots of money simply by articulating complex ideas, without needing to actually do anything with them. I’ve already started thinking about how I can get in on this game, and I think I’ve come up with something quite compelling.

My patent is on the idea of a system that allows people on similar planets to communicate using technology.

The idea is you use some of the findings of Science to control the transfer and storage of signals that stand for different words and ideas. Do you follow? This way, words, sounds, even images can be transmitted along wires or cables and through the stratosphere. Using various “tele-devices” people would get visions and phonetics from afar. Eventually people would be interconnected in a big network. Like a spider’s web, but a really big one, one that’s world-wide.

If anyone tries to rip me off I’ll sue the pants off them.
